How to Bulk Rename Files on a Mac

How to Bulk Rename Files on a Mac

Guys if you’re not bulk renaming files this way… firstly, I have so many questions and secondly are you okay?!

Not only does file naming keep your imagery organised, but it can also help boost your search-ability and SEO. I’m going to show you how to work smarter, not harder when it comes to batch renaming with one simple trick that everyone with a Macbook or iMac can do.

Watch Tiktok video here.

Step 1: Select all of the files you want to rename

Step 2: Right click and click ‘rename’

Step 3: By default you will see ‘replace text’ selected in the drop down, but you need to toggle this to ‘format’.

Step 4: Write the new file name in the ‘custom format’ field.

I only really use the name format Name & Index although there is also Name & Counter and Name & Date which would be handy for certain projects. Generally you can start the numbers at 1, unless perhaps you want to start the numbers at 401 for whatever reason, you do you boo.

This will bulk rename every file with this name and add a number at the end like this:

maddie-is-cool-2.jpg
maddie-is-cool-3.jpg
Cont.

Best Practices:

  1. Always use hyphens when writing file names and NO spaces

  2. Add the brand / client name to start of file name for SEO purposes

  3. Use Sentence case? I may be BS ing us all but it looks nice either way.

Have I just saved you days of your life? You’re welcome.
